Felon to Advocate

Steven just got out of federal prison three weeks ago. He was sentenced for murder at age 13 ½, and is now 59 years old. He says his time in prison has made him a changed man. After being released, he’s been attending NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings and staying sober.

He was originally supposed to live in Santa Cruz with his girlfriend. However, he says that the majority of jobs are out in San Jose. In his search for employment, he’s been living in his car and relying on organizations like Martha’s Kitchen for his meals.

But Steven had some good news to share as well! Starting Friday, he will be working at HomeFirst as a resident advocate. Resident advocates ensure the safety of the shelter and its clients, and work with the Social Services sector to advocate for their needs and rights.

I asked him if he was excited to start his job. He smiled and said, “I’ve taken so much from their [homeless] community, and I want to give back to them. I used to rob them…But I want to make amends.”
